I posted this reply several weeks ago and have not seen any further messages on the subject, but I am not subscribed to debian-boot, so was there follow up discussion there that I missed? I never did quite figure out the proper way to udebify the package and integrate it into debian-installer, but I did get it integrated into mkinitramfs.
