Bug#375314: xboard fails to start: X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)

2006-07-06 Thread Alexander L. Belikoff
I'm still trying to reproduce it in a fairly clean Sid installation and
still unable to reproduce. Googling shows that the majority of cases
associated w/ X_OpenFont error are due to a corrupted font database. I
think, I might need more help from you:

1. You seem to be running KDE. Could you try running xboard in a Gnome
session? KDE by default does some nasty things to make regular X clients
follow it's choice of colors/fonts.

2. Please run the following shell script and if the output log does
contain an X protocol error message, please attach it to the bug entry.

xlsfonts | while read font; do
echo font is $font
xterm -fn $font -e true 21
done run.log

Thanks

Bug#375314: xboard fails to start: X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)

2006-07-02 Thread oliver
At Tuesday 27 June 2006 14:00 you wrote:
 1. Could you please attach a full output of 'env'?

 2. Same request for 'xlsfonts' output.

 3. For one of the X clients that:
 a. Does use fonts
 b. Still works; and
 c. Has a resource file in /etc/X11/app-defaults/

Could you please temporarily move the resource file someplace and try
to launch the client to see if it would break it?

You can close the bug, I tried ssh -X to my station and xboard starts.

So it will have someting to do with the xorg transition from 6.9 to 7. I found
an ressource at wiki.debian.org and it tells me to remove (purge) the
xfonts-base package. That should fix it. I didn't try because other people
use this machine too.

Thanx for the help.

Oliver

2006-06-27 Thread Alexander L. Belikoff
So far, I was unable to reproduce the failure. However, I didn't use a
full Sid installation - only Etch and/or chroot'ed Sid. Still, let's try
to troubleshoot it. I assume it's still a problem, right?

1. Could you please attach a full output of 'env'?

2. Same request for 'xlsfonts' output.

Bug#375314: xboard fails to start: X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)

2006-06-25 Thread Oliver Korff
Package: xboard
Version: 4.2.7-6
Severity: important

This behavior appeared after an upgrade, *without* xboard being
upgraded. I assume its a encoding/font problem. In my env settings there
is a new LANG=en_US.UTF-8, but all applications defaults in /etc say
iso8859:

Example:
X11/app-defaults/Xditview-chrtr:H
-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal--*-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1\n\

There is no default in /etc for xboard

Here is the whole line of the error message:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xboard
X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)
Major opcode of failed request: 45 (X_OpenFont)
Serial number of failed request: 18
Current serial number in output stream: 19

Now whats strace says (short version)
