Is there a chance you try running the machine overnight a couple times
in the future? If not, I would rather close this bug as "probably fixed,
but not sure, so if anybody reproduces, please reopen".

OK, I am running the machine with debian package

Package: xserver-xorg-video-nv
Version: 1:2.1.1-1

and the one directly preceding this for about a week without any
problem. But unlike before, I a no more running that machine overnight.
Usually that reported bug always happened at nighttime: I left the
machine running at the evening and found it crashed at the morning. Now
I shut down the machine every evening, so it might not be proove the
absence of the bug.

However, with the upgrade to the 2.6.21 kernel, no more nvidia driver
anymore (and no AVM ISDN driver) the machine now shuts down without
problems what it didn't before.

2007-05-14 Thread Hadmut Danisch
Hi,

sorry, I am currently on vacation in Australia. I'll deal with the problem
when I'm back in Germany, because the computer with that particular
problem is there.

2007-05-08 Thread Brice Goglin
Hi,

Several months ago, you reported a bug to the Debian BTS regarding a
crash of the X server with the nv driver. Did you reproduce this problem
recently? With the latest xserver-xorg-core 1.3 and
xserver-xorg-video-nv 2.0.2 from unstable? I don't see any backtrace in
your logs, there should be one in the server is crashing.

Thanks,
Brice

Which means that this package is not "unusable for everyone", so the bug
is not "grave".
Could you please send us your complete X logs and configuration?
Without them it's very unlikely we'll be able to debug this problem.

Bug#396993: xserver-xorg-video-nv: Xserver crashes machine completely

2006-11-04 Thread Hadmut Danisch
Package: xserver-xorg-video-nv
Version: 1:1.2.0-3
Severity: critical
Justification: causes serious data loss

Hi,

this bug might be related to bug #394803, however it is much more serious.

Since I have upgraded to my new Asus mainboard, I'm in trouble with
the xorg nv driver (The nvidia binary driver works better, but for the
known security flaws I decided not to use it.)

When running the nv driver, I quite often find the machine completely
dead at the morning (the machine runs permanently), it then has
crashed at night and requires pressing the reset button. Strangely,
this never happens at daytime, although I am longer away for business
than in bed. I did not find any precise cause yet, so it was not even
clear what part of the system is the problem.

However, about bug #394803 (vanishing mouse pointer) I found, that the
mouse pointer problem is gone when I do

  xset s noblank

(Unfortunately, screen power saving is gone as well...)

As far as I can see right now, the crash problem is gone also, when
I do that. But when I run X without entering this command (I yesterday
restarted for other reasons), the machine crashes again. So there is most
probably a problem between the nv driver and this particular hardware

00:05.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C51PV [GeForce 6150] (rev
a2)
