Attepmting to install mysql-server hangs onkilling old mysqld, even
though it isn't running.

1) Why is it trying to kill an MySQL when is none is running?
2) Why does it hang? (I gave up waiting after 5 mins and hit control C).
3) MYSQL now unusable., please advise .
