"tar -Af backup.gtar mysql.gtar" resulted in backup.gtar apparently being corrupted, ie. a subsequent "tar -tvf backup.gtar" results in these error messages: tar: Unexpected EOF in archive tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now backup.gtar is about 0.5 G, but I can make it available for upload on my server if there is interest.
