  OK fine ... then the browser configured in /etc/icedove/icedove.js

  x-www-browser.

 I don't have /etc/icedove/icedove.js but /etc/icedove/pref/icedove.js:
 pref(network.protocol-handler.app.http, x-www-browser);

  what do you get for:

   update-alternatives --config x-www-browser

   SelectionAlternative
 - ---
 * 1/usr/bin/iceweasel
   2/usr/bin/xlinks2
  +3/usr/bin/opera
   4/usr/bin/iceape

  and

   update-alternatives --config gnome-www-browser

 No alternatives for gnome-www-browser.

  ... and which browser is actually used?

 iceweasel was used before, now nothing happens. But when I symlink
 gnome-www-browser to x-www-browser it works, which means that
 gnome-www-browser is used.

OK, what does:

echo $GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID

give you?

and what value do you see in Advanced Config Editor ... for
network.protocol-handler.app.http ?

p.s. please keep the bug in CC

Nothing. No GNOME* vars in env.

x-www-browser

Another interesting thing:
it won't start any browser unless libgnome2-0 is present.

It will use that if you are running gnome and haven't changed your
preferred application there. If not running in gnome, we now use whats
in the icedove.js file in /etc/icedove/ or in your profile user_prefs.js
