When I launch pidgin, the initial presence set in the program is always the one I had when closing pidgin, regardless of the "startup presence" preference in the Preference dialog box. Steps to reproduce: 0. Start pidgin 1. connect to a jabber server (other protocol might work as well but I only have a jabber account) 2. check that the startup presence preference is set to "online" 3. set presence to "Away" 4. Close pidgin 5. Start pidgin again : presense should be "Online" but is "Away".
