what I did:
sudo aptitude install module-assistant alsa-source
sudo m-a prepare
sudo m-a build alsa
sudo m-a install alsa
sudo alsaconf
(but this didn't get debian sound system
reassign 465161 linux-latest-2.6

After just upgrading linux-image-686 from 2.6.22 to 2.6.24+13 my Meastro3 does
not work anymore.
The version of alsa-base has not changed (remains 1.016-1) however syslog shows:
Maestro3: probe of :02:01.0 failed with error -2

The ALSA drivers are part of the kernel. Your kernel (2.6.23)
provides version 1.0.14. What we are doing is to serve the actual
