Bug#474346: Installer keeps asking to insert CD1
Hi Gilberto, Sorry for the late reply, but as I already said privately, I needed some time to think about this and to prepare some things. As you have probably seen through the bug closure mail, I have uploaded some changes that should fix your problem and also some problems reported by others after additional changes in daily builds. Basically I never expected that mounting a CD on two mount points at the same time would be a problem. And in most cases it is not, otherwise we would have seen a _lot_ more reports of installation problems with Beta1. However, it obviously is a problem in some specific cases, probably either hardware or kernel driver related. As both of those subjects are rather outside our scope and as it is very hard to work on something like that if you cannot reproduce it yourself, I have decided to structure things so that that problem is completely avoided. At least for now. Unfortunately there is not much I can ask you to test now as there are no full CD or DVD images that have the latest code. They will only be built after the current changes migrate to testing when we start preparing for the Beta2 release. I may contact you again when we do though. Partly to get things straight for myself, I've written a wiki page [1] that explains the issue. You may be interested to read it. Thank you very much for your report and the information you provided. It definitely helped me to define the issue and to decide on the solution. Below some comments on your last mails. Note that you can still reply to this, even though the bug report is closed. Doing this, there was only one problem: The grub did not identified the Windows installed in the same HD and I had to edit the menu.lst manually. Yes, that is expected. Because you force the CD to be ejected, it is no longer mounted on /cdrom, so the installer can no longer load the additional components it needs to detect the Windows partition. Now, I am downloading the new DVD image (April 7th). This will take a long time. After I am going to try to install using it in other DVD drive and I will send the results. (These results were sent without gzipping the syslog file, so that mail never made the d-boot list. It is included below.) Maybe, the problem occur only with the DVD disk. The CD disk is fine. That is an interesting data point. I have never actually tried with DVDs myself (they are just too damn big IMO :-). On the other hand, I cannot really imagine what's so different between CDs and DVDs that they should behave differently. There is certainly no difference in the way we produce the images. Then, I tried to press enter several times, but it did not work. I switched to debug shell and I typed eject. I put the DVD again and the installation continued. Please make sure it is in the drive. If retrying does not work, you should check the integrity of your CD-ROM. Failed to copy file from CD-ROM. Retry? YES NO I pressed YES many times, but the DVD was not read. OK. I've explained that above. For this to work again, the DVD has to be mounted manually on /cdrom from a debug shell. Basically you have to undo the eject command you gave earlier. Then, I had to pressed NO three times to the GRUB install process complete. That's probably because it tries to load three different components. After, I chose the option CHECK the

Thank you very much for the answer. I will wait for the version beta 2. After, I will send the results of the installation. Answering your question: Did you try the CD and DVD in the same computer and in the same DVD drive? Yes. I did the installations in the same computer, using the same DVD drive. Actually, I used 2 DVD drives, but in both I tried to install using CD and DVD. Do you know when the Lenny beta 2 will be released? Thanks again, Gilberto

I'll send you a mail when you could do a test because it would be most useful to have a test when the new versions are in testing but we still have a chance to fix things _before_ we actually release Beta2. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#474346: Installer keeps asking to insert CD1
Hello. First, I tried install using a CD, from april, 7th, instead of a DVD. I did this because I began suspicious that my DVD drive is broken (I explain this in the end of this e-mail). This time, I used a different CD drive to burn and install. I followed the information you passed me (priority=medium, language = english, add line set -x ...). The install process was normal and the message (insert the CD 1 ...) did NOT appear. Then, I stopped the copy process of the files and restart the system. After, I did a normal installation, using installgui and I chose language portuguese - brazilian the install process was normal and the message did NOT appear again. All file were copied normally. In the others installations using DVD (last 2 weeks), I verified the MD5sum from images .iso and I asked to brasero 0.6.1 verify integrity. But, in the install process, the message (Insert CD 1 ...) appeared and after the programs were installed, some files from GRUB were not copied and appeared a message asking me if I would like to try again copy the files or continue the installation. I could not copy the files and I continued the installation without that files. Doing this, there was only one problem: The grub did not identified the Windows installed in the same HD and I had to edit the menu.lst manually. Because of this I chose install using other DVD drive. But, I don't have other DVD writer, then I used a CD writer. Now, I am downloading the new DVD image (April 7th). This will take a long time. After I am going to try to install using it in other DVD drive and I will send the results. Thanks for the time spent. Package: apt-cdrom-setup Version: 1:0.34 Severity: important This is a follow up to bugs #464023 and #470423. I downloaded the lastest version, weekly-builds, April 2nd. The checksum matched. But, the message is displayed, yet. Insert the CD 1 ... I tried press ENTER, but nothing happened and the message continued. I had to open a terminal and I typed umount /cdrom and after eject. After, I inserted the DVD again, the installation process continued normally. Should I get the DVD image from lenny_di_beta1? The image was created in march 17th. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#474346: Installer keeps asking to insert CD1
Hello Gilberto, First of all, thanks for testing this again and following up on it. On Saturday 05 April 2008, Frans Pop wrote: This is a follow up to bugs #464023 and #470423. As you've already seen, I've decided to open a new bug report in your name so we can investigate, and hopefully solve, this issue. Please keep your replies to this new bug report from now on. I downloaded the lastest version, weekly-builds, April 2nd. The checksum matched. But, the message is displayed, yet. Insert the CD 1 ... OK. Obviously that should not happen. Exactly at what stage was this? Was this still during the scanning of the CD set, or was it after the installer had asked about participating in the popularity contest and what packages you wanted to install? How many CDs did you scan? Only the installation CD itself or more? I tried press ENTER, but nothing happened and the message continued. I had to open a terminal and I typed umount /cdrom and after eject. After, I inserted the DVD again, the installation process continued normally. Glad that that workaround still works. Should I get the DVD image from lenny_di_beta1? The image was created in march 17th. No, that should not make any difference: they have exactly the same version of the installer. To find out exactly what is happening I'd appreciate if you could do the following: - boot the install with 'install priority=medium' - please run the installation in English so we can read the logs - before the configure the package manager step, switch to a debug shell and add a line with 'set -x' below the first line of the following scripts: - /usr/bin/load-install-cd - /usr/lib/apt-setup/generators/41cdset - /usr/lib/apt-setup/generators/50mirror - /usr/lib/pre-pkgsel.d/10laptop-detect - /var/lib/dpkg/info/pkgsel/pkgsel.postinst This enables debugging output from which we'll be able to tell where things go wrong. If you need more help with this, please let me know and I'll give more detailed instructions. - continue the installation until where the dialog hangs - switch to the debug shell again and type 'eject' to free the CD - complete the installation and reboot After that, please send the following files from /var/log/installer: - hardware-summary - status - syslog (probably very big, must be compressed!) Thanks a lot in advance. For your information: after the Beta1 release I've already implemented a change that should make the whole process a lot less susceptible (and maybe even invulnerable) to this issue, but unfortunately there are not yet any full CD/DVD images that include that change. I would still like to investigate exactly what's happening in your case though. Cheers, FJP signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.
