I have had the marilliat libraries installed, but removed them as you can
see below, and I'm still seeing this. 

(Only debian-multimedia package I have installed now is w32codecs.)

AFAIUI, pal-dv is an mpeg based format, right? The ffmpeg package has
mpeg encoders stripped out to comply with the requirements of
ftpmaster.  Can you try to transcode to an non-mpeg based format?

I agree that the error message should be better.
