In the thread at

it seems that the closed source nvidia driver was reporting a maximum pixel 
clock
frequency limitation of the GPU rather than of the monitor. 

So it is possible that the nv driver is doing the same thing, in which case it 
is correct.
However the messages in Xorg.o.log don't give that impression at all: as noted 
above
the message is 
  (II) NV(0): Not using driver mode "2048x1152" (exceeds panel dimensions) .

So both drivers could do with clearer log messages at least.

However, it does look as if it is still a panel size problem with nv rather 
than the
pixel clock.
