I installed roundcube yesterday from backports. It was a first time
install, and I did reproduce this behavior.
Looking at /var/lib/roundcube/config/main.inc.php I found:

This happens even for very small attachments? Could also look in
/var/log/roundcube/errors if you have something that could help us?
