until 3.0 I never had to set PETSC_DIR and PETSC_ARCH, it was working out of the box. The other problem is that it affects slepc too. What I do at the moment is use 2.3.3 which works without problems, I just had to recompile with the newest openmpi I will look again into this, I am pretty sure I went down the road of setting these PETSC variables, I will do that again.
