Hello Susam,

Susam Pal [2009-04-25 14:20 +0530]:
I installed postgresql using the command:
 aptitude update; aptitude install postgresql

What is the precise output of this command? Please do

  aptitude purge postgresql-8.3
  aptitude install postgresql-8.3

and send the output. It should say why it does not set up a default
cluster.

Thanks,

Martin

Hello Susam,

Susam Pal [2009-05-03 18:02 +0530]:
After purge and install the problem is fixed.

And you originally installed it with aptitude install as well? Do
you know what changed on your system since then? Did you ever have
previous installations on this system?

Thanks,

Martin

Bug#525523: postgresql-8.3: /etc/postgresql directory missing after postgresql install in squeeze

2009-04-25 Thread Susam Pal
Package: postgresql-8.3
Version: 8.3.7-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I installed postgresql using the command:
aptitude update; aptitude install postgresql

(postgresql depends on postgresql-8.3)

I try to start postgresql by running this command:
/etc/init.d/postgresql-8.3 start

However, it does not start. When I tried to debug the
/etc/init.d/postgresql-8.3 and the
/usr/share/postgresql-common/init.d-functions scripts, I found that the
later is trying to look for /etc/postgresql/8.3 directory.

But, as I mentioned this directory is missing.

I found the following postgresql related .deb files:

nifty:/var/cache/apt/archives# ls postgresql*.deb
/var/cache/apt/archives/postgresql_8.3.7-1_all.deb
/var/cache/apt/archives/postgresql-8.3_8.3.7-1_amd64.deb
/var/cache/apt/archives/postgresql-client-8.3_8.3.7-1_amd64.deb
/var/cache/apt/archives/postgresql-client-common_98_all.deb
/var/cache/apt/archives/postgresql-common_98_all.deb

However, none of them have the /etc/postgresql directory.
