I decided to give it another spin, and see if the oldstable version would work. Which it didn't.

Then, however, I just created a symbolic link in /usr/bin, for /usr/bin/xemacs to point to /usr/bin/xemacs21 (which was present), and hey, presto!

Upgrading to the testing version proved to be no problem either.

Apparently update-alternatives can't work with a broken link, and xemacs won't fix it by itself (or something).
