Hmhm, I'm not sure. I don't think so, but it could still be an environment problem in the shell. Afair, xfce4-session sends a dbus message to hal to ask for shutdown, so you might want to monitor both dbus (dbus-monitor) and hal (lshal -m) and see what happen in both cases (doing so from another box with ssh might be a good idea).
