Bug#598133: gdm3: Should provide shortcuts and configuration snippets to enable accessibility

2010-10-17 Thread Samuel Thibault
Debian-boot, this is about letting d-i automatically enable
accessibility features of gdm3 when accessibility was enabled during
d-i.

It shouldn’t be hard to implement with a GConf value that is read in the
greeter. Such a value could easily be set in d-i.

How is this done from d-i more precisely?

You need to ship a file in /usr/share/gconf/defaults. Like for gksu,
this one should probably be an alternative.

Mmm, ATM there are both speakup and brltty which would want to enable
Orca for instance. How to do this properly? My concern is making sure
that no package upgrade will unexpectedly override the alternative that
has been chosen by d-i.

Else, a dirty-but-working way would be to let brltty or speakup
d-i scripts create a file in /usr/share/gconf/defaults and run
update-gconf-defaults.

 No idea.

AIUI, that would be the responsibility of gnome-settings-daemon, see
plugins/a11y-keyboard/gsd-a11y-keyboard-manager.c:
on_status_icon_activate(), which should get triggerable by a shortcut.
Thus cloning since it's independant from being configurable by d-i.

No idea.

Also, there should probably be a possibility of configuration snippets
to enable it. I mean, when a blind uses e.g. braille output during
Debian installation, braille output should be enabled in gdm3 at reboot
in the freshly installed system. Brltty can emit a couple of lines
somewhere to do so, there just needs to be a place to emit them to.

I don’t know for brltty, but all the a11y stuff can be enabled/disabled
by the admin (in /etc/gdm3/greeter.gconf-defaults) or by a package
(in /usr/share/gdm/greeter-config/).

If you need to start another tool, have a look
in /usr/share/gdm/autostart/LoginWindow/. All gdm3 does is starting a
minimal GNOME session, so everything you can do in a GNOME session can
be done here, just in different directories.

Cheers,

If there are, they don't seem to be documented.

In GDM2, this used to be done with the keymouselistener module.
Is this functionality gone in gdm3?
