Nigel, could you try to reproduce this bug ? I'm unable to reproduce
it on Wheezy, and everything seems right in package Depends.

Removing gnuchess INSTALLS xboard.
Removing xboard INSTALLS gnuchess.
apt-get purge should REMOVE, not INSTALL your software
