The applet should be there regardless. It's possible to install themes

Since the gnome3 junk silently replaces somewhat usable previous setup

There is no way to

 - set the icon and gtk theme or any theme at all
 - change the window manager, especially the 'fallback' vs useless gnome-shell
 - 'desktop effects' or similar setting which would allow switching between GL 
and Render

'Details' is uselessly named. Maybe 'About Hardware' ?

control center is just a bit smaller than the contained icons and not resizable.
