Actually it didnt exist, the directory is empty:
nveber@pyre[4761:~]$ ls -al /var/mail
total 8
drwxrwsr-x 2 root mail 4096 Jul 8 2010 .

So I downgraded to version -5 but the problem was still there.
Next I restored my old config files and found the following difference:
pyre:/etc# diff -r dovecot/ dovecot.restored/dovecot/
