The 3.0 firmware files work for me!

This is an old Centrino laptop with a fresh Wheezy install. At a big site
with many APs, wireless stops after 15 to 45 minutes, requiring a reload of 
the ipw2200 kernel module. When using OpenVPN, it stops after only a few 
minutes, making it unusable. The 3.14 backport kernel does not change that.

Throwing the firmware files from the link given by Andres into 
/lib/firmware and reloading the kernel module one last time resolved the 
issue.

The card in question is, according to lspci :
"Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG [Calexico2] Network Connection (rev 
05)".
