I experienced the same symptoms when trying to use unison-gtk.
Attempting to create a new profile with its wizard resulted in a crash
and the same messages as in the original report when attempting to
select source and target directories.

I re-installed the QtCurve theme and can confirm meld still crashes in
the directory selector when this theme is selected.
Oxygen-gtk theme continues to cause similar crashes and I will report
the bug.
The Adwaita theme continues to work well with meld.

I've just noticed that the meld file selector works fine when doing a
file comparison. Only when a directory comparison is selected and
the first directory for comparison is chosen does the selector cause a
segfault crash.

not solve the problem.
Removed ~/.gtkrc-2.0 and ~/.gtkrc.bak. This did not help.

Changed the GTK theme widgets to Adwaita and meld works like a dream
