Package: open-vm-tools
Version: 2:9.4.0-1280544-6
Severity: wishlist

Dear Maintainer,

I was wondering if you could change the packaging for the open-vm-tools products
so that the /lib/modules-load.d/open-vm-tools.conf file is moved from the
open-vm-tools package to the open-vm-tools-dkms package instead.

It is possible to install and use the open-vm-tools package without needing the
open-vm-tools-dkms package. When doing so, boot up results in an error message
being written to the console about failing to load the vmhgfs module.

My logic behind this request is that most of the VMware kernel modules are part
of the standard Linux kernel these days.
Installing the open-vm-tools-dkms package only results in the following VMware
kernel modules being built on the current Debian kernels:

        - /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/updates/dkms/vmhgfs.ko
        - /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/updates/dkms/vmxnet.ko
        - /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/updates/dkms/vsock.ko

The first two are the only extra modules, with the last one replacing the
following module that comes with the standard kernel:

        /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/net/vmw_vsock/vsock.ko

In our environment we have no need for the extra two modules.

Avoiding installing the open-vm-tools-dkms package means there is no need to
install the dkms; gcc compiler; libraries; and other dependencies, resulting in
a leaner, more secure installation.

Since the vmhgfs.ko module is not part of the standard kernel, there is no
point trying to load it unless it has been compiled, and that doesn't happen
unless the open-vm-tools-dkms package has been installed anyway.

Regards,

Jim Barber
