Indeed. I asked upstream and he replied:

Hi. I do not plan to maintain the video detection for sites that can play
video without flash. When I started this project, the youtube HTML5
experiment only worked for a few videos but now it seems to me that every
video can be played natively. On youtube comments and suggested video
click do not works because it's in AJAX. I will eventually remove the
youtube parser when no video will be detected at all.

So according to upstream it is wontfix.

OK, I see.

Thanks a lot for getting in touch with the upstream developer(s).
This is really appreciated.

Luckily we won't need anti-flash plugins on youtube much longer since they've
made HTML5 player default, according to

Interesting, thanks for pointing it out.
When a recent enough version of Iceweasel reaches Debian testing,
I will benefit from this new YouTube HTML5 video default...

Bye.

This is upstream issue. Besides even on Youtube some movies fail in native
HTML5 mode so 100% compatibility is hard to achieve.

Well, we are not speaking about 95 % compatibility, either.
I would rather say that the compatibility (on YouTube) seems to be less
than 10 %: the vast majority of the YouTube videos I tried to watch
are completely unavailable with this extension enabled (while they can
be watched without xul-ext-video-without-flash, by using
browser-plugin-gnash).

 Please read notes (see
link more from add-ons page), check README,

Done, but I failed to find any useful tips, unfortunately.

Disabling the HTML5 module seems to make things worse...
I failed to find other settings that may help to improve the situation.

and also remember to try new package version 1.5.1
 (recently uploaded).

Version 1.5.1 seems to fix the issue with partially shown videos:
images are no longer shifted down and the controls are visible (so that
I can adjust the volume!).
Hence, the new version is a significant improvement, but does _not_ fix
the issue with undefined undefined videos.

Bug#772421: xul-ext-video-without-flash: on YouTube, some videos are not played, other videos are shown partially

2014-12-06 Thread Francesco Poli (wintermute)
Package: xul-ext-video-without-flash
Version: 1.5.0-1
Severity: important

Hello,
thanks for packaging this possibly useful extension!

I am giving it a try, but I am experiencing some issues.
For instance, when trying to watch videos on YouTube, I seem to be
completely unable to watch some of them.
One example is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIj3kpPYh1M

which shows that undefined undefined text in the black rectangle,
and leads to the This page isn't available. Sorry about that.
Try searching for something else. error message, when clicked.

Please note that, without the xul-ext-video-without-flash extension,
I can watch the video (with gnash) flawlessly.

Some other videos, such as for example:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lK588zl0l2M

seem to be watchable, but they are shown with images shifted down by
almost half height (with a black bar on the top and the bottom part
of the image not visible) and seem to lack a way to adjust the volume.
Right-clicking and selecting Hide Controls/Show Controls from the
context menu does not seem to change anything.
Please note that, if I can watch videos belonging to this second category,
by following the Open in a new tab link and then using the iceweasel
support for the webm format (thus not using flash, I think...).

Please also note that I have the xul-ext-noscript extension installed
and enabled, but allowing all YouTube JavaScript to be interpreted
does not make the issues vanish...

Can you reproduce the bugs I am experiencing?
Please investigate them and fix them or, maybe, forward my report upstream.

Thanks for your time,
bye.
