Package: putty
Version: 0.63-8
Severity: normal

Thanks to David G. on #debian @ irc.oftc.net for bringing this to my
attention and helping with testing and finding the commit that fixes
the issue. He first discovered this bug using Windows PuTTY 0.63
connecting to a Debian wheezy system running Dwarf Fortress. It also
affects the version currently in jessie.

David discovered that parts of the display that were bolded were
disappearing (black text on a black background). He asked upstream and
obtained this helpful workaround:

This sounds like a known problem in PuTTY 0.63, where a setting's
value was inadvertently changed. Try changing
"Window->Colours->Indicate bolded text by changing" to "The colour",
or upgrading to a current development snapshot.

I confirmed this issue in 0.63-8 on sid, first by checking the default
setting, which is "The font", not "The colour" as it should be, and
second by using a capture of Dwarf Fortress output provided by David,
which I have attached. Just cat the file in PuTTY using default settings
and compare to cat in xterm, which displays it properly. In PuTTY, the
whole menu disappears, rendering the application practically unusable.

The patch for this is at:

http://tartarus.org/~simon-git/gitweb/?p=putty.git;a=commit;h=c0b6e0b9626baecab20ba6946dc26a75f187e2cf

Workaround: If you're having this problem, as upstream advised, just
make the configuration change indicated above. That makes the test file
display properly for me, and also worked for David.

Thanks,
Ben
