I did that a while ago, but it was on Tails (based on Jessie back
then): https://labs.riseup.net/code/issues/10797

Thanks, intrigeri! That indeed looks identical.

I'll do so. I also verified that the current version is still affected
here.

This bug is still marked as unreproducible. Did you (or anyone else)
try to reproduce with my previously described steps (see below)?

2017-07-19 Thread intrigeri
The Mutter 3.24.4 announcement says that
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=784223 has been fixed.
I suspect this is the same bug as this one.

So anyone affected: please try to reproduce once Mutter 3.24.4 is in
Debian :) Thanks in advance!

Bug#782075: gnome-tweak-tool: Crashes Gnome when reducing Number of Workspaces

2016-09-18 Thread Jens Reyer
control: found -1 mutter/3.21.91-2

Hi Andreas Henriksson,

I think I found how to reproduce this:

In a freshly installed Stretch system (my main machine) this happens
only if you've set in the Gnome Tweak Tool:

Desktop - Icons on Desktop - On

After this as previously described:
Workspaces - Workspace Creation - Static
Workspaces - Number of Workspaces - Reduce by one
--> the Desktop wallpaper gets black for a short time, then
  everything is back to normal.
Workspaces - Number of Workspaces - Reduce by one
  --> Gnome session crashes

Further observations from my fresh installation tests on my main machine:

New Jessie installation, no changes --> crash reproducible
Update to Stretch, still no changes --> no crash

Bug#782075: gnome-tweak-tool: Crashes Gnome when reducing Number of Workspaces

2016-09-14 Thread Jens Reyer
control: found -1 3.14.4-1~deb8u1

I just reproduced the crash on a freshly installed *Jessie* laptop (only
the tasks Gnome, ssh-server, system utils, and the packages etckeeper
and smartmontools* installed, nothing else, no changes).

So I can/could reproduce this on 3 machines:
2x on Jessie
1x on Stretch/Sid/experimental

However recently (see buglog) I found that this doesn't happen anymore
for fresh users on the Stretch machine, while my regular user on the
same machine still experiences this. When I first reported this bug even
fresh users on that machine experienced the bug.

Therefore I assume the main issue is fixed in todays mutter, but there
are some configuration/whatever settings remaining which still affect
todays mutter. So users updating from Jessie to Stretch might be affected.

I'll probably reinstall my Stretch machine soon - I might do that twice,
once Jessie->Stretch, and once Stretch directly. Any tips what I should
do then, besides creating the backtrace?

2016-08-31 Thread Jens Reyer

Hi Andreas

I updated my system as requested (had to uninstall the gnome metapackage
and some extensions).

I can still reproduce this for my regular user with mutter/gnome-shell
3.21.91-1, see attachment. All extensions were disabled.

However it now works for a fresh user. Note that in the past I could
reproduce this on two machines, even for fresh users, see buglog.

At least GNOME now (at least since 3.20) doesn't disable all extensions
automatically anymore after a crash :)

Could you please also test the latest gnome-shell / mutter
versions from unstable?

I'm not able to reproduce this issue with that version atleast.
(Tested both under Wayland and X11.)
Might have been fixed already which would be good to test before
I waste too much time digging into this.

Yes, still happens every time I decrease the number of workspace
windows by one. If I repeat that step the whole GNOME session
crashes.

See attached screenlog.0

I followed https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/GnomeShell/Debugging
(and added that link to the Debian wiki).

Exact steps I did:

[INSTALL] libpulse0-dbgsym:amd64 9.0-2

Hi,

here's the screenlog/backtrace following
https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/GnomeShell/Debugging after upgrading to
the new mutter version.

The log/backtrace shows the assertion failed in mutter when I reduced
the number of workspaces in Gnome Tweak Tool the first time.

I didn't do the second reduction, which would be necessary to actually
crash the Gnome session.

Bug#782075: gnome-tweak-tool: Crashes Gnome when reducing Number of Workspaces

Control: tags -1 - moreinfo

Hi,

[ I removed the moreinfo tag for now, although I assume the info
that I provide is not sufficient yet. Still, I guess this matches
  the correct workflow. ]

Thanks for your answer. Strange, I could reproduce it on a freshly
installed Desktop PC and a laptop. The only common thing I can think
of is the Intel graphics hardware and arch amd64. Uneducated and
maybe biased guess ;)

For now I only found and attached (parts of) /var/log/user.log:

18:01:09: I reduce the number of workspaces by one (Desktop reloads
  (?), but no crash yet).
18:01:47: I reduce it by another one -- crash.

The crash seems to always happen after the 2nd reduction (increasing
works fine).

I'm a bit clueless which information to provide, e.g. which process
to backtrace, etc.. I found no logs in ~/gnome*. Instructions or
a reference to an instructional website are welcome.
I'd be happy to provide more information, currently hanging out on
#debian-gnome as jere21.

So it seems to be mutter crashing on an assertion failure, reassigning.
More information on your exact way to attempt to reproduce could be useful.
Exact number of workspaces, number of windows open and on which workspace
they reside, etc

https://wiki.debian.org/HowToGetABacktrace

If not even you can reproduce the problem I guess it will be hard to
get anywhere. In case you manage to do it again, please try with the
new mutter version that should be available in sid/unstable today/tomorrow.

Hi,

I can reproduce the crash everytime, on both machines. One of those was
a fresh installation.

Setup:

Fresh, new user. No changes at all. First login. The first thing after
logging in is to reproduce the crash. So no other windows/workspace
stuff or extensions.
(But it also happens for my regular user, with some Gnome Tweak Tool-
and probably dconf-changes, after working for some hours and having open
windows. No difference, I always get the crash.)

Reproduce:

1. Start Gnome Tweak Tool
2. In the Workspaces tab set Workspace Creation to static.
3. Click on the Minus next to Number of Workspaces, reducing it
   from 4 to 3.
-- the Desktop wallpaper gets black for a short time, then
  everything is back to normal.
4. Click the Minus a second time, reducing it from 3 to 2 (without
waiting for a longer time between both clicks.)
  -- The following screen appears:
Oh no! Something has gone wrong.
A problem has occured and the system can't recover.
All extensions have been disabled as a precaution.

Thanks for the link, but that's just the basic stuff. E.g. I have no
mutter process running. For now I've found
https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/GnomeShell/Debugging, hope that works. I
will try tomorrow with the new mutter version.

Bug#782075: gnome-tweak-tool: Crashes Gnome when reducing Number of Workspaces

2015-04-07 Thread jre
Package: gnome-tweak-tool
Version: 3.14.2-2
Severity: serious
Justification: causes data loss

Hi,

reducing the Number of Workspaces (for Workspace Creation Static) in
the Workspaces tab of Gnome Tweak Tool crashes the whole Gnome session:

Oh no! Something has gone wrong.
A problem has occured and the system can't recover. All extensions have
been disabled as a precaution.

Therefore all unsaved changes in any running application are lost and
extensions have to be reenabled manually.

I noticed this on a fresh (2015-04-05) Jessie installation with no
extensions. I can reproduce it here on my daily-use-laptop Jessie
installation.

Thanks
jre
