The shell script shipped with the package doesn't support '--' standard
argument, i.e it will treat it as a file. The shell script could easily be
written to use getopt for shell the script.

I have discovered this because ranger[1] comes shipped with config files that
suggest to call mupdf as

    mupdf -- "$@"

I saw that the shell script is part of the debian source package and I can't
find it on the upstream repository[2] so I assume that it was written by the
package maintainer. If not so, can you tell me where I should redirect this bug?
