Honestly, my solution is "get a Mac". Desktop Linux is just terrible.

If you turn off all graphics acceleration, it will probably work fine. But be 
slow. Because whatever version of whatever software you have does not support 
whatever particular version of hardware you have installed.

Regardless, it's not something I can fix, or work around. XScreenSaver is 
working according to the specifications. The problem is on the other end.

though I didn't understand why every other are running well except 
"surfaces".


To contribute, I would like to read if this video driver bug has already 
been reported. You seem to know better than me , can you please give me 
a tip on how to identify the incriminated package ?

Dear Maintainer,

how to reproduce:
0/selecting random screensaver in the xscrensaver dropdownlist
1/enabling "surfaces" in the screensaver list, leaving default settings (GL and
commandline="surfaces -root")
2/go for a coffee, come back
3/screen is not updating and display a "surfaces" typical drawing. PC is not
responding.
4/hard reboot
5/log in
6/go somewhere, come back
7/screen is not updating and display a "surfaces" typical drawing. PC is not
responding.
8/hard reboot
9/attempt to report bug : a new version of xscreensaver-gl-extra. Updating it
from jessy to strech testing version. Update dependencies
10/go for a coffee, come back
11/screen is not updating and display a "surfaces" typical drawing. PC is not
responding.
12/hard reboot
13/uncheck "surfaces" in the screensaver list ("surfaces" is still highlighted
in the screensavers list and a small demo of "surfaces" is running on the right
of the list)
14/after a while (<2min) the screen flicker once,then only the mouse is
responding to movement (not click, not keyboard)
15/hard reboot
16/Report bug as other screensavers in the list do not hang this pc.

Workaround : not enabling "surfaces" or working continuously
