Thanks. Confirmed that the text is correct now.

Issues around dropping certain list will be discussed on DebConf 2017.
Let's wait till after that
and discuss the issue in another bug if needed.

I'm sorry, but you seem to have text of two lists mixed up.

For example, https://lists.debian.org/debian-chinese-gb/ is only for Simplified
Chinese and debian-chinese-big5 is only for Traditional Chinese.

I'm providing the correct description words here again for you reference:

debian-chinese-gb

debian-user in Chinese [Simplified Chinese]

Debian Chinese Project; Chinese localization (l10n) issues, documentation
and website translation, user support, Chinese-specific development, etc.

Posts may be in English or Chinese. The simplified variant of Chinese
(Simplified Chinese, like zh_CN or zh_SG) is preferred.

Languages used on this list: Chinese, English.

Posting address: debian-chinese...@lists.debian.org

debian-chinese-big5
=

debian-user in Chinese [Traditional Chinese]

Debian Chinese Project; Chinese localization (l10n) issues, documentation
and website translation, user support, Chinese-specific development, etc.

Posts may be in English or Chinese. The traditional variant of Chinese
(Traditional Chinese, like zh_TW or zh_HK) is preferred.

Languages used on this list: Chinese, English.

Posting address: debian-chinese-b...@lists.debian.org

Ping? Is there any listmaster alive?

The need of updating list descriptions is still valid. Please try to fix them
when possible. See Bug #861378 for details.

I have no objection on closing debian-chinese-big5 if the majority of Taiwan
users and developers on list find that appropriate. Yet list descriptions
should be updated as long as that list is not closed.

Hi,

I think we can disable this mailing list due to the following reasons:

* For translation related discuss, we can go to debian-l10n-chinese.

* For Debian user in Taiwan, A new list debian-dug-taiwan has been
  requested (#847950).

Bug#861378: lists.debian.org: Please update list description for debian-chinese-{gb,big5}

2017-04-28 Thread Boyuan Yang
Package: lists.debian.org
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-CC: debian-chinese-b...@lists.debian.org,
debian-chinese...@lists.debian.org

Description words for debian-chinese-gb and debian-chinese-big5 are severely
outdated. Thus I'm seeking help to update those words.

Current problems:

* UTF-8 encoding has largely replaced others when using Chinese in Linux world.
Mails sent to both mailing lists in recent years are 100% UTF-8 encoded.
GBK and BIG5 are quickly becoming irrelevant.

* Cross-posting mechanism (See bug #237723) has been broken for
**decades**. With no intention of fixing, such information should be removed
from list description.

* Non-subscriber posting is allowed currently, which conflicts with current
statement in the description.

-

As a result, I believe it would be better if we differ those two lists
according to
language variants (zh_CN, zh_TW, zh_HK, zh_SG, etc) instead of text encodings
(GBK, BIG5, ...).

Proposed list descriptions are as follows:

debian-chinese-gb
=

debian-user in Chinese [Simplified Chinese]

Debian Chinese Project; Chinese localization (l10n) issues, documentation
and website translation, user support, Chinese-specific development, etc.

Posts may be in English or Chinese. The simplified variant of Chinese
(Simplified Chinese, like zh_CN or zh_SG) is preferred.

Languages used on this list: Chinese, English.

===

debian-user in Chinese [Traditional Chinese]

and website translation, user support, Chinese-specific development, etc.

Posts may be in English or Chinese. The traditional variant of Chinese
(Traditional Chinese, like zh_TW or zh_HK) is preferred.

Please help reviewing and updating corresponding descriptions.

Thanks!
