Thanks :) The nice thing of smartd+some-notifyer over g-d-u would be that it's probably much more flexible than the (presumably in the end libatasmart-based) gnome-disk-utility. Also, for smartmontools I'd know that it's pretty much kept up to date with current disk models and quirks for them... not idea whether or not libatasmart is as properly maintained as well. Cheers, Chris.

About notification of disk failures I'll do some tests with broken hard disk to see how smart-notifier works but probably not in few days, if it works very well and without problems too I also think it could be very useful and I will ask maxy if possible to add it.
Bug#893658: [pkg-cinnamon] Bug#893658: cinnamon: recommend smart-notifier
Hi. I've just noted that gnome-disk-utility, which cinnamon now recommends somewhere, claims (in it's README): >gsd-disk-utility-notify: >gnome-disk-utility notification plugin for GNOME Settings Daemon >Disk health failure notification (SMART status) Not sure if it really does that,... and I'd say smartd is way more powerful + handling low-level block device stuff is not really an areay where I'd consider GNOME to be highly qualified... Nevertheless,... you may consider it as a fix for this bug. smartmontools anyway suggest smart-notifier so everyone should be happy. However, I personally would feel better if the gsd-disk-utility package could be split up so that there's a package which does only the SMART notifying... it seems a bit scary, that the gnome-disks utility shows a GUI which seemingly allows to format partitions, edit fstab options and the like. Cheers, Chris.

Mhh, I wasn't aware that it's unmaintained... :-( OTOH, the code seems really pretty simple and there is a python3-dbus, so I'd guess porting it would be not too difficult. Given it's simplicity, I'd also say that any serious issues are rather unlikely. So right now I'd still say, recommend it (otherwise people may only notice their smart errors if it's too late). Even *if* it would be dropped from Debian, it would simply be removed... so no real issue as well (apart from having no SMART error notification anymore). I've submitted: https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/7383 asking for some "integrated" SMART notification... but whether this will be implemented (and when) is completely open, so I'd still say it makes sense to recommend the existing solution until something better is there. Anyway,.. just an idea :-) Cheers, Chris-

Bug#893658: cinnamon: recommend smart-notifier
Package: cinnamon Version: 3.4.6-1 Severity: wishlist Hi. I couldn't find information on whether cinnamon itself queries smartd (if installed) and displays warnings about SMART errors in the GUI (where users will likely see them, unlike as in the syslog). In case cinnmon itself doesn't do that (which I guess is the case), could you please recommend the smart-notifier package? Not sure in which cinnamon meta package, cinnamon, cinnamon-core cinnamon-desktop-enviroment... but likely one of the more low-level ones :) Thanks, Chris
