Updated packaging is now on the Ubuntu bug above. Most of the quirks (RPATH, leaking private symbols, man page syntax errors, pkg-config file) have been committed upstream and cherry-picked into that. There will be an upstream 1.5.1 release soon-ish, they are working on some other fixes first
