At least for use during the build I would advise against using it at the
moment. See #980930 for details.

Since then the Python 3 port reached Debian, does this mean that this
bug report should be closed or should packages still drop asciidoc?

Bug#895462: asciidoc: deprecate in Debian

2018-04-11 Thread Joseph Herlant
Package: asciidoc
Version: 8.6.10-2
Control: b
lock -1 by 884213 893467 895186 895187 894192 894194 894188 894697 894700
894710 895165 895166 895167 895168

As announced by upstream in their last release[1], this is probably the
last release of asciidoc and encourage people to move to alternate tools
such as asciidoctor.

Asciidoc currently supports python2 only and the port to python3 [2] don't
seem to receive enough effort to go through [3], [4].

As we are pushing EOL of python2 in Debian, we need to properly manage the
EOL of asciidoc.

Concerning the move to asciidoctor, the following bugs need to be solved
before being able to really push forward: #884213, #893467, #895186, #895187

Command I used to get the list of packages that depends on asciidoc:
grep-dctrl -FBuild-Depends,Build-Depends-Indep,Recommends,Suggests -e
asciidoc[^t] -sPackage /var/lib/apt/lists/*Sources | cut -f2 -d ' '

I'll open debian bugs as I go and sometimes push upstream fixes. Here's
what I got so far:

altos --> #894192
anet  --> #894194
ansible --> fixed upstream, debian: #894188
apgdiff --> used in the debain side only. #894697
autorevision --> #894700
awesome --> fixed upstream, debian: #894710
awesome-extra --> #895165
ben --> #895166
bgpdump --> #895167
boot-info-script --> #895168
