you're really welcome, this was a long standing bug for me, so I was the
happiest to finally solve it.
Back to subject:
I'm willing to accept that /etc/default/ should not be used by the
systemd config, but in this case I believe every reference to systemd in
/etc/default/openvpn should be removed.
This was the cause of my greatest confusion when I tried to configure
the system to autostart all my connections and it took a long time and
some lucky searches to finally find out that the file is not parsed at all.
Especially misleading was the part of the file that writes something
along the lines 'if you are using systemd then you should run systemctl
daemon-reload', and below that it is written "the rest of the options in
this file are ignored". But in reality the whole file is ignored. :)
Is this is another bug, so should I file another report, or is it easy
enough to clean it up?

The setup via/etc/default/* is part of the old SysV init scripts.
With systemd you can use "systemctl edit openvpn...." with the same
behavior.
