I'm afraid vmdebootstrap is nearing its end of life. You'd be advised
to try another tool, such as vmdb2, debos, or FAI.

I am afraid I can't reproduce the problem you reported. My suggestion,
if you can switch to another tool, is to try to remove all options
that you can, and to build an image based on stretch instead of sid.
That might work.
