Yes, that is correct, I've read the gitlab entries yesterday. But if you read them you will find that this is basically a stalemate [gnome calendar does not support ics files and therefore cannot have the mime but mime is required to select it on the settings panel] and the problem still persist -

I found out a solution to this problem by studying gnome-control-center source code. it looks for an application which has support for "text/calendar" mime: https://github.com/GNOME/gnome-control-center/blob/master/panels/info/cc-info-default-apps-panel.c#L167 the solution is as following - from

Package: gnome-calendar Version: 3.30.1-2 On an install of Debian Buster when I open gnome-control-center I am unable to set gnome-calendar as a the default calendar even though it is installed. (I can however set Evolution or Thunderbird as the default).
