I have reported that dragdrop in the open dialog of
Zipper.app works. I suppose that I have tried this only with folders
because now I am able to drop only folders in the NSOpenPanel dialog.

There was no error. kpsewhich latex.fmt outputs
/var/lib/texmf/web2c/latex.fmt.

For me yes - it is OK, but there are books refering to virtex and
initex. I think you can decide about this issue better than me.

I can not copy a folder that I don't have write permition using
GWorkspace. Try for example to copy /lib inside your home directory.
