Although the correct wlanctl-name_of_ssid file exists,
an ad-hoc network is never created correctly. The script
/etc/network/if-pre-up.d/linux-wlan-ng-pre-up
has these lines disabled:

I'm experiencing the same and would like to know whether this indicates a
situation to worry about, or just find some way to filter out those messages if
