I, too, was surprised and pleased to see Compiz back in the Debian repositories.
I have installed it on a Debian Unstable installation with MATE on a fairly old

I just downloaded this file (Andy's Baby Animals - Hiding) to test.
I can't find --vmode in the manpage; there is a --tvmode.

The recent Compiz update reset my CompizConfig defaults.
It was OK because I had my preferences backed up.
But I don't think that should happen.
