your 2.6.16 config please?

i bet your trouble is not reproducible with stock debian
linux-images.

concerning the severity reread the severity descriptions.

You mean the .config file from the /usr/src/linux dir, or do you mean
 the config from initramfs-tools?

yes the .config from your 2.6.16 kernel.
usually also on /boot/config-2.6.16

I may have caught my error (based on our conversation and my searching
since then, I agree with you this is probably my fault!)...I had md in
the module list. I don't know how it got in there since I have raid1 and
raid5 modules listed. I haven't tried a fresh mkinitramfs yet, but will
try asap. I don't know if this would cause initramfs to have problems but
not initrd. Is ramfs somehow used earlier and this erroneous module might
have tripped it up, but not initrd? Hmmm

no that is not my current guess,
but let's see.

best regards

Ok..attached from the boot directory.

i bet your trouble is not reproducible with stock debian
 linux-images.

I am more and more convinced that it is a problem with something else that
just happens to manifest in mkinitramfs. Here is some more info:

First, the last message in the boot sequence, before the runaway modprobe loop
statements, is:

testing anibus ECB encryption

Hopefully that gives you an idea of where this is happening in the process.

Another interesting point, and I'm suspcious that this is related to the
mkinitramfs problem is something to do with md in the /etc/mkinitrd/modules
file. If I put it in, it gives me a warning that module md is not found
(since there is no module md..duh!), but if I leave it out then I seem to
be having problems not pulling up the 2nd half of the raid mirror on the raid
device that root sits on (not so for the other raid devicesinit
problem??).

Note that I first noticed this when I tried using yaird, as yaird gave some
kind of /dev/hdX not found error, despite the fact that my raid 1 is on scsi
devices... When I re-ran mkinitrd, after trying yaird, I got an error
message about the md module that I had in he /etc/mkinitrd/modules file. I
was confused since I believe I had that in there for several years and had
used mkinitrd successfully.

When I boot using a 35 day old initrd image, the raid device that root sits on
has no problem forming.

Sorry, this might be a wild goose chase, and it's not necessarily mkinitramfs
problem.
