I can't reproduce this myself. I've just done the following:
11:02:34 t...@debian:~/debian/tkcvs$ echo '*font:fixed' > ~/.Xdefaults
11:02:37 t...@debian:~/debian/tkcvs$ xrdb -merge ~/.Xdefaults
11:02:50 t...@debian:~/debian/tkcvs$ tkcvs
and tkcvs worked fine (albeit looking a bit rubbish with the fixed
font...!). Perhaps it was a tk bug which has since been fixed? Do you
still have this problem on your system?
