For the record: I have moved away ~/.kde and the problem disappeared. I guess some old state in there caused the problem. Obviously KDE5 does not make much use of it anymore as I lost only some settings...

I have created a new user and there it seems to work fine. So the reason seams to be some old state in my user profile (that I have since KDE3). Any advice on how to proceed? I think this problem will go away as soon as some packages in unstable migrate to testing (which should be rather soon). When I ran apt-get dist-upgrade and it installed plasma-nm version 4:5.3.2-1 the result is that the network manager applet or widget has completly disappeared! It is not in my system tray anymore either in the visible part or the hidden part. Add-Widgets can not find it to install it. Get new Widgets can not find it either. No way to get kde to do network management.
