According to upstream it's already fixed in knotifications 5.18.0+ (available
in experimental only for now).

Agreed, especially since the original submitter wasn't using awesome.

This has nothing to do with awesomewm (but can be related to Qt).

The stack trace indeed looks like an endless loop between Qt and the KDE
Platform Theme. I suppose the latter has some problems when being used outside
the Plasma desktop.

It would be *very* interesting to know the line numbers in #26..#28.

Can you please install libkf5notifications5-dbg package (while it's available),
get a new traceback with it, and paste those three lines?

If you want a workaround, try starting Vlc with QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME=generic.

Thank you for the backtrace. This seems to be an issue between Qt (or somewhere
in the Qt/KDE stack) and your WM. So I'm reassigning it to Qt and awesomewm.

Cheers

Hello. I've recently started experiencing this bug after upgrading to
stretch. I can confirm that the problem has something to do with running
VLC under a non-KDE environment as was reported earlier. (In my case it
is awesomewm). If I run in a full KDE environment it does not crash.
When it does crash, it briefly displays the UI, then prints
"QSystemTrayIcon::setVisible: No Icon set" repeatedly in the terminal
before crashing.

Notable sections of a very large stack trace are below.

Bug#807805: vlc: Crash upon startup

2015-12-13 Thread Hormet Yiltiz
Package: vlc
Version: 2.2.1-5+b1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?
After a recent system upgrade in Debian Testing, `vlc` cannot start
   and crashes reporting:
   "QSystemTrayIcon::setVisible: No Icon set"
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
This is reproducable in my environment. I am running i3wm installed
alongside with KDE5. Reinstalling or reconfiguring `vlc` did not
   solve the issue.
   * What was the outcome of this action?
   VLC crash upon startup.
   * What outcome did you expect instead?
   VLC starts normally.

Bug#807805: vlc: Crash upon startup

2015-12-13 Thread Hörmetjan Yiltiz
I realized that vlc only crashes in my i3wm setup, but does not crash if
started from the KDE5 environment.

calling `vlc --no-qt-system-tray` will start vlc and is an effective
workaround.

Hörmet

Please install vlc-dbg and qtbase5-dbg and provide a full backtrace.

Downgrading accordingly.

Thanks! Is it due to a lack of some interface in i3wm, in which case it is
i3wm's bug, or that `vlc` is assuming some interface that is not
necessarily present in any system?

It's hard to tell without a backtrace. But it sounds like a i3wm or Qt 5 issue
to me.
