FYI this has been confirmed by one of the alpha porters to be a bug in
the kernel (a very long time ago). I'm not sure why it's still not been
taken care of Please ask the alpha porters about the status of them
fixing the kernel issue.

As of lately alpha has been added to the "fucked archs" list (see bottom
of debian/rules) which means util-linux runs the testsuite but ignores
any failures to make the package build (without any guarantees of
working at all).
