Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal

The GNOME team have been trying to remove dependencies on various
deprecated GNOME 2 libraries from Debian, but it now looks as though
Adrian Bunk intends to adopt gconf and oppose its removal. Whichever of
these eventually happens, if it isn't going to be removed immediately,
please move its libraries and development headers to the oldlibs section.

gconf is dead upstream (deprecated in 2010, latest release 2013, latest
commit 2015) and should not be used in new projects. Adrian doesn't
seem to disagree with the GNOME team on gconf's deprecated status; the
disagreement is solely about whether to keep it minimally maintained
for another release cycle, or remove it.

Language bindings for gconf might also be candidates for a move to
oldlibs, but I don't know how which factor takes higher precedence between
"CLI bindings should be in Section: cli-mono" and "deprecated libraries
should be in Section: oldlibs". Language bindings include:

libgconf2.0-cil
libgconf2.0-cil-dev
gir1.2-gconf-2.0
guile-gnome2-gconf
libgnome2-gconf-perl
python-gconf
