May bad, I misread https://bugs.debian.org/858528 then which seemed
liked it was introduced for the jessie → stretch upgrade.

But it was introduced well after stretch, only a couple of weeks ago ...

Hi,

/etc/default/grub.d/init-select.cfg afaics was introduced to ensure
smooth upgrades from jessie to stretch.
It seems safe to drop this workaround now.
