Please install package.json and add compatibility symlinks for finding this as a node module (symlink from /usr/share/javascript/caret.js to /usr/lib/nodejs/jquery.caret). This is required for webpack to find the library in the standard path which is now required for gitlab (earlier they just used a vendored copy and now they use the node module). I'd be happy to help implement this if you like.
