It allows programs in any language to send traces uniformly. In particular, sending messages between programs and timing information are standardized, which allow any OpenTracing-compatible servers to display graphical profiling information. One of the best known such servers is JaegerTracing. The available languages are currently: Go, Javascript, Java, Python, Ruby, PHP, Objective-C, C++, C#. Currently on Debian there are packages for the Ruby and Go interfaces. The source code for the Python interface is available at https://github.com/opentracing/opentracing-python. I have seen that Carlos Alberto Cortez is the main committer, but I have not contacted him. I use the Python interface for my Python2 programs to track performance issues. At the moment I rely on the PyPI package and virtualenvs, but it would be much cleaner to have a proper Debian package. I'm not sure what is the best way to proceed. If it's trivial for the Python team to add this package and handle it through their automated scripts, we can go for it. Otherwise I think I can work on packaging and maintaining it myself. Thanks!
