Hmm, OK. I was expecting the behaviour would become identical,
although I am not sure which of the two behaviours I prefer...

Even with the bug fixed there is still a small difference. Just
mentioning it here for completeness:

When you use --source then reportbug expects you to give the name of a
binary package and will figure out the source package name for you. With
the src: prefix shortcut you need to give the name of the source package

The reportbug behaviour differs between src:samba and --source samba,
the former asks for which binary package the bug is about while the
latter just goes directly to listing bugs in the samba source package,
ideally both would just go to the bug listing.

In case it matters, I don't have the samba binary package installed,
but I do have other binary packages from src:samba installed, see below
