I could not reproduce this; the package built in about a minute on a
quite low-end system in a sid chroot. I wondered whether it might
depend on network access, but I did not see any sign of this.

The attached patch seems to fix this problem for me.
Use the color depth of the window for its backing, rather than that of
the visual.
The visual has a color depth of 32 (here), whereas the window has a
color depth of 24 (here). This caused the following gdk assertion
