I have a suspicion what is causing the problem:
/usr/include/xapian/keymaker.h declares a member variable named slots
and I am using QT, where this symbol might be redefined by some
makro-magic. I won't have time to create a fix within the next one or
two weeks, but I hope I can fix it

I have prepared a patch. I did not encounter any problems, the patch
seems straigtforward to me.
The only problem I was able to detect is, that when updating iptotal an
error is reported:

As part of my NM application I am asked to fix an RC bug. I would like
to go with this one, which is open for quite some time.
If I am able to work it out, I will prepare a patch. I will also prepare
an NMU (as part of my NM task), so if you'd like the fix can probably be
NMUed.

assumption, that this it is only a performance issue.

Well, #316628 was fixed. But apt seems to be changing its ABI at a daily
basis (its another version of apt that is currently missing) :-(
Currently I can't do anything about this, because QT3 is not yet
compiled with the GCC4, resulting in a crash when recompiling against
QT isn't the bottleneck anymore. But to install the latest version, alot
of dependend packages have to be removed.
I will wait for the other packages to be updated.
Perhaps its time to take a look at chroot...
